Prevent Problems with Dental Checkups/Cleanings
If you can prevent issues like tooth decay and gum disease from forming, then you can avoid the need for extensive restorative treatment and cosmetic touchups. In fact, prevention is the cornerstone of your daily hygiene routine. Brushing and flossing removes plaque to reduce the risks of dental health issues developing. Also, scheduling a dental checkup and cleaning appointment every six months allows your hygienist to thoroughly clean away harmful plaque and tartar (calcified plaque). Dr. Nielsen can also carefully check for signs of dental trouble that need immediate attention.
The Cleaning and Polishing
A dental cleaning comprises half of your routine visit, and involves a skilled hygienist removing every trace of plaque and its calcified form, tartar, from your teeth. Made largely of oral bacteria, plaque and tartar are the main contributors to tooth decay and gum disease – both of which stem from excessive oral bacteria buildup. Using special equipment, we can remove the threat from your teeth’s surfaces and along your gum line, then polish your teeth for a smooth, attractive finish.
After your teeth have been professionally cleaned, Dr. Nielsen can inspect your oral cavity for signs of trouble. A visual inspection combined with advanced diagnostic imaging, like digital X-rays and intraoral cameras, can reveal warning signs that you might not notice on your own, such as:
- Weak spots in tooth enamel that preclude cavities
- Slight gum recession that could leave teeth roots exposed
- A discrepancy in your teeth’s alignment that needs correction
- Inflammation and irritation that could indicate gum disease
- Tissue abnormalities, like lesions and ulcers, that could warn of oral cancer
